Dominican Republic – Weather Alert

We arrived on Bacardi Island (Lavantado, Samana DR) in beautiful sunshine. We had already gone through a squall in Samana Bay, but now it was fantastic sunshine. Minutes after we sat down to a buffet lunch, under a thatch roof dinning area, the rains came again. A heavy down pour that lasted perhaps 5 minutes. Then it was sunny again. The Caribbean is in the tropics, rain happens but for the most part it comes in short bursts. Cozumel in December was wet, but the rains came as if on schedule, around 2 pm each day and only lasting about half an hour. Jamaica on the Eastern side heading towards Ocho Rios had rain on about half the days we were there. Holguin Cuba, mostly sunny and dry but one day when it did rain, the downpour was unbelievable..For the most part the Dominican Republic was sunny and dry, one particular week in December we had rain in the middle of the night but by morning it was sunny and clear. If you are going to holiday in the Caribbean be ready for rain, but remember the weather you left behind. I will choose rain in the Caribbean when the weather is 30 degrees over snow and cold in Canada any day. Finally, in Holguin Cuba during the downpour, I was in the pool thinking this is pretty cool, Cindy and I have also been in the ocean at Grand Palladium during a down pour and in Jamaica when it rained we went for a swim. It’s a holiday have fun and have memories.

My husband and I are going on a Western Caribbean cruise around New Year’s Eve for our anniversary. What should we pack for the weather there? We will be stopping at the Bahamas, Jamaica, and the Grand Caymans. We have our formal wear for Captain’s Night, but beyond that, I am at a loss.
