January 8th evening was truly a momentous occasion for the medical students who were formally enrolled at the International American University College of Medicine (IAU). The 13th White Coat ceremony which was held at Kimatrai Hotel in Vieux Fort saw the students being draped in their white coats and stethoscopes creating quite a spectacle. During the solemn occasion the students read the Hippocratic Oath which outlined what is expected of them as physician in training. It reads in part: I publicly acknowledge and accept the privileges and responsibilities given to me as a physician in training and dedicate myself to provide care to those who need …. The various speakers which consisted of officials of the school and students spoke about the school in glowing terms. In his welcome remarks Dean of Basic Sciences Dr. Jayant Mohite described the event as a landmark one. He said that the students made the right choice by deciding to enroll with the University, adding that it will equip them with the necessary tools to prepare them for the future. The road ahead is very long and challenging, Dr. Mohite said. Dr. Olusina Adesanya impressed upon the students, the need to always respect themselves and behave in a professional manner. Organizers say Saint Lucia Jazz recorded increased numbers with 40% of spectators repeat visitors from previous years of the festival. Celebrating its 19th year the festival opened with two nights at gaiety and ended with three events at pigeon island. Headlined by two Jamaican singers Saint Lucia jazz included locals like Carl Gustave and Teddyson John mixed with Americans and the British. Along with declaring it a success organizers were also looking ahead to next year.

The origin and design of the Saint Lucia National Dress is said to have been fashioned from a similar one worn by the women of Southern France, since most of our customs were influenced by those who came to the Caribbean when France was the mother country. In Saint Lucia, as well as in the French neighboring islands of Martinique, Guadeloupe and Dominica, many changes were made to the costumes to make them the most colorful and gorgeous to be worn by a native of these Islands. The national dress is called the Madras and is a three piece outfit consisting of a white blouse known in French creole as (Chemise decoltee) made of cotton or poplin and trimmed with borderie anglaise and red ribbon. The outer skirt is made of Madras material (made in Madras, India) and can be long or short. This outer skirt is worn over a long white cotton slip which is trimmed at the bottom with rows of insertion lace through which red ribbon is weaved. The head piece, called the TÃªte en l’air is also made of Madras material and tied in peaks at the top. (These peaks represent various levels of romantic commitment).
