Smartly attired with their white coats and stethoscope, reciting the Hippocratic Oath, 43 medical students from various parts of the world began their journey into the medical profession when they were formally enrolled with the International American University College of Medicine (IAUCOM) during it’s 16th White Coat ceremony, held at the Kimatrai Hotel in Vieux-Fort last Friday. The ceremony was attended by a number of prominent citizens in the community and government officials including the Minister of Social Transformation, Public Service, Human Resource Development and Youth and Sport, Hon. Leonard Montoute and St. Lucia’s High Commissioner to the UK, Eldridge Stephens. The various speakers wished the students well in their studies and outlined what is expected of them as medical students. They also spoke volumes of the school during the momentous occasion. In his welcome remarks, Dean of Basic Sciences, Dr. Jayant Mohite described the event as a landmark one in the professional journey of the students. He urged them to work hard and focus on the task ahead in order to complete the journey. “The road ahead is long and challenging…The coat you’re about to wear is an affirmation of your commitment to basic tenets of medicine,” he told the students. Dr. Mohite described IAU as the right place for the students to pursue their dreams of becoming medical practitioners, adding that they will be provided with the right tools to succeed in a constantly changing health …

Explicada paso a paso para hacerlas en casa…… Proceso de; Masa Madre ó Siembra y… Masa para las conchas ……….. LEVADURA FRESCA O LEVADURA SECA : Los cubitos de levadura fresca prensada tienen un peso de 42 gr. y sirven para 1 Kg. de harina como máximo. Como norma general se utiliza para 500 gramos de harina, entre 30 y 40 gramos de levadura fresca (mas o menos un 6 % del peso de la harina). El peso de los sobres de la levadura seca en polvo o deshidratada de panadería depende de la marca. Normalmente se indica en el sobre. Por ejemplo los sobres que tienen 5,5 g. equivalen a 14 gr. de la fresca. Dos sobres (8 gramos cada uno) de levadura en polvo, seca o deshidratada , equivalen a un cubito de levadura fresca o prensada (42 g.). Pero la cantidad de levadura no depende solo de la cantidad de harina, sino también de otros ingredientes que puedan hacer una masa pesada, como por ejemplo frutos secos (nueces, almendras…) y la grasa que contenga (mantequilla, margarina…) en estos casos se necesita más.
