I was in junior high school when Funkin’ For Jamaica was a big hit on the R&B charts in 1980. I’ve always loved the song. For the longest time I didn’t know the name of the song or the artist. Now that I’m in my mid-30’s I keep hearing the song pop up in several feature movies as background or party music, but never actually showing up in the movie soundtrack. The song is as great as ever, and seems to have carried itself well over the last couple of decades. I’ve heard rap remakes of this song, but the original arrangement of this song really brings back a lot of happy memories. Anyone who likes Old School R&B, and even contemporary jazz, will love this song and this album. It’s a classic that is a must-own.

When I first heard Tom Browne’s release, ‘Funkin To Jamaica’, I checked around to several stores to purchase it. However the music was popular I had to put it on special order. Musicians, even gospel musicians raved about this release. The stores informed me they had trouble keeping it in stock. Trust me it is a good release. Also, thanks to Amazon.Com for offering this release, because after my tapes had worn out from about 4 years of ‘excessive play’ from 1982, and it has taken me, yes, just this long to replace it. Talk about ‘Jamaica Funk Withdrawal’! Also, I would like to have Tom Browne’s “Magic”, another great release in the tradition of ‘Jamaica Funk’. If it is being offered or can be ordered please e-mail me. Thanx again to Amazon.com.

I was a fan of Tom Browne during the early eighties, his heyday, and found many of his recordings in line with much of the jazz fusion of that time. When purchasing this CD, I mistakenly thought that it was the original “Funkin for Jamaica” album which was a good album, instead of a compilation. The tracks chosen for this CD lean heavily on the pop-jazz end, and fails to demonstrate any of Mr. Browne’s acumen on the trumpet. Except for “Funkin for Jamaica” and one other track, this CD is very forgetful.

OK,he looks awfully familiar(kinda resembling Steve Arrington from legendary rock/funk outfit SLAVE),but that is not fusion great,Mr.Tom Browne,as you can see on the same page where it’s listed,OK?! It’s really bizarre how artists of yesteryear get botched-up,be it names, pictures and what not, kinda funny,in a strange & weird way? Yet that has to be bloody irritating to the artist themselves,ARGH/URGH?!
Happy hunting,people?!
