There was a shuttle that departed San Pedro for Antigua direct for 40 quetzals leaving at 8:30 am We hopped on and bumped into our friends Caroline and Franziska on their way to Coban City via Antigua. Fata Morgana supplied us with the most delicious foccacia bread for breakfast. While all the foods we’ve eaten so far have been delicious, I must admit to a slight hesitation in consuming another tortilla. The lady selling the scarf was back. She still wouldn’t budget from her high of 50 and I wouldn’t come up from 45. It was less about acquiring the item, it was an all out war of wills! Needless to say neither of us ended up with what we wanted. My negotiations professor would not be pleased with this outcome. The remainder of the ride along the lake was peaceful and idyllic in the sunlight. If there was more time, we’d be on a boat taxi cruising to San Marco. As soon as we arrived in Antigua, we checked into the Black Cat Hostel and booked their 55 quetzals afternoon tour of Volcan Pacaya that came so highly recommended. Children sold walking sticks as soon as you got out of the van. Don’t pay any more than 1 quetzal if you do go. It is what kind of a difference that is up to each of us.”" – Fran Peavey Walking a kilometer to Spanish School at 7:30 every morning I start my day accosted by clouds of dust, exhaust fumes and the odour of urine in the streets (no it’s not the dogs). There are cobblestone sidewalks, stucco walls and 3 active volcanoes surrounding the town. The volcanoes have been very active lately and lava flows and steam are clearly visible. There have been several tremors in the past few weeks that remind me we are on active fault lines. Armed National Guards are always on the street, but occasionally I’m surprised by a pickup truck full of camouflaged soldiers armed with Uzis that suddenly careens to a stop beside me and they all jump out. Having done nothing wrong I’m not worried, I just don’t want to get between them and someone who has. Navigating the narrow elevated cobblestone sidewalks is an art form. They are not level.
